A Touch of Classical Plus, Inc. - Calderon Music Studio

“Teaching is not my main purpose. I want to make good citizens.” – Shinichi Suzuki

ATCP offers lessons via Zoom or in-person at the home studio of Mrs. Phyllis. Offerings include violin, viola, and piano. Students are engaged in two weekly lessons: the private and the group. Private lessons focus on fine-tuning students' techniques through learning repertoire. Class instruction emphasizes music theory and performance techniques. Students who are advancing also participate in chamber ensemble technique classes.

Students and parents receive free access to Mrs. Phyllis' supplemental YouTube videos, the ATCP Google Drive folder, and PDF materials. Students also receive access to opportunities with ATCP partner music organizations. Some events are free, while others require a small fee.

Designed for young students (ages 2-5) and their parents, Music Adventures is an excellent beginning before entering into formal instrument instruction. Students receive the fundamentals of music through fun songs across various languages, games, and activities and explore the piano and stringed instruments.

All string students learn the Suzuki repertoire.

Structured with the parent and the child in mind, the weekly private lesson for ages 3-10 utilizes the methodologies of Dr. Suzuki and Mimi Zweig. Parents attend quarterly educational meetings typically via Zoom, and they are active participants in their child's weekly lessons taking notes and asking questions at the end of the class. The expectation is that students ages 11 to adult take notes, manage their at-home practice time, and follow any teacher-suggested tips on having a practical at-home practice session.

The weekly group component supplements the student's lessons. Here, the student learns to play the instrument with their peers and understands music theory concepts through engaging games on and off the instrument. Once the student has begun to "talk" on their respective instrument with ease, they move into the learning of reading the pitch.

Not all method books align with a student's learning style. Over the years, the following piano instruction and theory books are the ones that have yielded the best results with my students and are the ones I currently employ:
  • Mayron Cole Method (this is free by clicking on the link, or you may purchase it through Amazon)
  • Suzuki Piano books
  • Alfred's Basic Adult All-in-One Course Books 1 and 2
  • Fundamentals of Piano Theory for Prep Level to Book 10. Brand-new beginners will purchase the red introductory book.
